Area IV
Envirothon
A Natural Challenge

The Area IV Envirothon is a competitive event to help prepare and qualify students for the State Envirothon Competition.  It is open to high school and middle school students in Area 4 counties which include:  Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Halifax, Johnston, Nash, Vance, Wake, Warren and Wilson.

The Envirothon program is a pre-qualifier competition among five-member teams.  Students compete in their knowledge of natural resources.  There are five subject areas of study.  They are Soils, Forestry, Wildlife, Aquatics and Current Environmental Issues.

The five-member team take a written test at each of the five stations and the team with the highest total score wins the competition.  The top seven scoring teams advance to the State Envirothon Competition.
High school and middle school teams do not compete against each other.

The winning high school team at the State Competition advances to the National Envirothon Competition.  The National Envirothon Competition site rotates annually to different locations throughout the United States and Canada
